Department: Health Info Mgt - Coding

Schedule: Regular FT 40 Hours Per Week

Shifts: Days

Under the direction of the Coding Supervisor, the Coder III is responsible for utilizing available encoder, grouper software, and other coding resources to determine the appropriate assignment of ICD-10-CM, CPT and/or HCPCS codes, as appropriate and abstract pertinent information from patient records. Must have extensive Acute outpatient coding experience in multiple areas of specialty such as, but not limited to: Emergency Room, Injections and Infusions, observation, hospital outpatient procedures and as needed diagnostic and ancillary records and outpatient provider-based clinic visits. Position can be specialized to code inpatient cases. Maintains coding productivity and quality benchmarks as prescribed by the Coding Policy and Procedure, as established for Valleywise Health System.
 
Hourly Pay Rate: $24.96 - $36.82
 
Qualifications
Education:
  • Requires an associate degree in Health Information Technology or a related field or an equivalent combination of training and progressively responsible experience that results in the required specialized knowledge and ability to perform the assigned work in lieu of a degree.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Experience:
  • Requires a minimum of six( 6) years of Hospital/Facility based Outpatient coding experience that demonstrates an understanding of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Level I Trauma coding experience, preferred.
  • Prior coding experience in a teaching hospital, preferred.
  • Burn coding experience, preferred.
     
Specialized Training:
  • Requires the ability to pass a coding exam, at or above 85% accuracy, prior to hire.
  • Prefer training in 3M encoder and EPIC Electronic Health Record.
Certification/Licensure:
  •  Must have a current coding certification as either CCS,CCS-P, COC or CPC, CIC.
  • RHIT or RHIA certification also accepted, with requisite coding experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must possess knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT/ HCPCS, and to Query the Physicians, as appropriate.
  • Must have knowledge of and be able to code all types of patient medical records, including Outpatient, Emergency Medicine, Behavioral Health, Observation, Infusion and Injections, Edits and Errors, and Same Day Surgery.
  • Must achieve and maintain appropriate coding quality and productivity established in the Coding Department Policy and Procedure.
  • Must have a strong understanding of computer applications and automated encoder systems.
  • Must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, surgical terminology, pharmacological terminology, and patient care documentation terminology.
  • Must have the analytical ability necessary to interpret data contained in records and to assign appropriate codes.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent customer service skills.
  • It requires the ability to work well independently and demonstrate independent decision-making abilities.
  • Requires the ability to read, write, and speak effectively in English.
