Facility: Valleywise Health Medical Center

Department: Health Info Mgt - Coding

Schedule: Regular FT 40 Hours Per Week

Shifts: Varied

Under the direction of the Coding Supervisor, the Medical Coder I will review, analyze, and assign diagnostic and procedure codes to patient medical records for billing and statistical purposes. This position will assist in ensuring that all codes assigned are compliant with the current coding guidelines, regulations, and facility requirements.

Hourly Pay Rate: $20.52 - $30.27

Qualifications:
Education:
  • Requires an associate degree in Health Information Technology or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and progressively responsible experience that results in the required specialized knowledge and ability to perform the assigned work instead of a degree.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Experience: 
  • Prefer healthcare coding experience with a working knowledge of inpatient coding requirements that demonstrates an understanding of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Specialized training:
  • Requires the ability to pass a coding exam before hire.

Certification/Licensure:
  • Must have certification as either an RHIA, RHIT, CCS-A or CPC-A within one year from start date in position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Requires the ability to work on campus for a minimum of six months of employment or until released to work remotely. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of ICD-10 and CPT codes.  
  • Must be able to achieve and maintain appropriate coding quality and productivity established in the Coding Department Policy and Procedure.
  • Must have an understanding of computer applications and of automated encoder systems. 
  • Must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, surgical terminology, pharmacological terminology, patient care documentation terminology, ICD-10, and CPT codes.  
  • Must have the analytical ability necessary to interpret data contained in records and to assign appropriate codes.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent customer service skills.
  • Requires the ability to work well independently and demonstrate independent decision-making abilities.
  • Requires the ability to read, write, and speak effectively in English.
